French tests and certifications

Obtaining a French certificate strengthens your resume for future job opportunities as well as for school applications. On top of that, since 2019, French certifications are mandatory for non-Swiss residents that live Switzerland. But when it comes to choosing a certification, you might feel confused as you might not know which one is the best for you. Here is a small introduction for each type of test and their characteristics.

Why should I certify my level of French?

Now a days, French language certifications are becoming more and more important. Obtaining a language certificate can open many doors, specially if you are planning on applying to a university abroad of if you wish to evolve in the professional world. By certifying your language skills, you will have a much better chance of continuing your studies in an French-speaking country or working abroad. For people wishing to enter the finance or business sector, French certificates are a major asset to have on a CV. Among them, the DELF/DALF.

DELF/DALF

The DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are two diplomas, issued by the French International Center for Educational Studies, which are highly recommended (in some cases mandatory) if you wish to study, work, or travel in a French speaking country.

The DELF has four levels: A1, A2, B1 & B2, according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the DALF is open to students at level C1 and C1+. If your goal is to apply to a prestigious university or to work in a public or private organization, you should aim for the DELF B2 level.
