French tests and certifications
Obtaining a French certificate strengthens your resume for future job opportunities as well as for school applications. On top of that, since 2019, for non-Swiss residents living in Switzerland, acquiring a French certification has become a mandatory requirement. But when it comes to choosing a certification, you might feel confused as you might not know which one is the best for you. Here is a small introduction for each type of test and their characteristics.
Why should I certify my level of French?
Nowadays, French language certifications are becoming more and more important. Obtaining a language certificate can open many doors, specially if you are planning on applying to a university or if you wish to evolve in the professional world. By certifying your language skills, you will significantly improve your chances of pursuing your studies or your career in Switzerland or a French-speaking country. For people wishing to enter the finance or business sector, French certificates are a major asset to have on a CV. Among them, the DELF/DALF.
DELF/DALF
The DELF (Diplôme d'Études en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are two diplomas, administered by the French Ministry of Education. They are highly recommended, and in some cases mandatory, for those wishing to live, study, work, or travel in Switzerland or in a French-speaking country.
The DELF certificate is divided into four levels, corresponding to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels A1, A2, B1, and B2. And the DALF consists of two levels, C1 and C2, which are suited for advanced users. If your goal is to apply to a prestigious university or to work in a public or private organization, you should aim for the DELF B2 level.
